A letter from an unknown author of the Whittier Extension Company to J.P. Quigley in Oakland, California. 23 October 1913.
A typed, 2 page draft letter in responce to J.P. Quigley's letter (object number 2017.41.1.233) requesting information on the North Whiiter Heights subdivision. A descriptive folder will be mailed under a different cover letter. In the folder will be a map of the tracts as subdivided, a map of Southern California showing the exact location of the property, as well as articles on the soil, water, climatic conditions, and terms of sale. Unplanted land costs between $600 and $800 an acre with the cheaper land needing more leveling before trees can be planted. This land is subdivided into tracts of 5 acres and up, with water being piped to each property and road improvements. Close to 200 acres have been planted to valencia and navel oranges, lemon, and grapefruit. These young groves are being offered in 5 and 10 acre tracts at an extra $175 per acre. The Whittier Extension Company will also contract to have an orchardist care for the young grove at a small cost. Terms of purchase are 1/58 cash, 1/5 in 2 years and the balance in 5 years. They have sold around $300,000 worth of property, mostly to local and sucessful citrus men, which should speak for the merit of the land. The Whittier Extension Company believes this land to be the best citrus land currently on the market in Southern California and would like very much to show Mr. Quigley the property when he is in the Los Angeles area. The top of page 1 has "letter 'E'" written in the center, a pencil drawing in the top left corner, and corrections throughout this draft letter. Also, the back of page one has the begining of a letter scribbled out.
The pages (a and b) have been glued together in the top left corner, warping in the top left corner, discoloration along the top and right side, small tears and abrasion damage along the top, ink stain in the bottom right corner, minor creases (probably from being handled), page 1 has a small piece missing from the bottom right, and page 2 has a small fold of the bottom right corner. This object is in good condition overall.Lexicon
