Description

A letter from an unknown author to Mr. O.P. Gaustad in Cleary, Alaska. 23 September 1913. A typed, 2 page letter, where an unknown author is responding to a letter that O.P. Gaustad sent asking how his trees were doing in Orchard Dale. The trees came out in pretty good shape considering they just had the most severe winter in 30 years. Few trees were killed below the bud, but most were not hurt at all. The author suggested to Mr. Gaustad's father that the killed trees be replaced but he wants to wait till Mr. Gaustad comes to California in the fall. Mr. Gaustad's father is keeping the property well, but they seem to be missing their Dakota friends. The author believes that the area will not have another cold winter for many, many years, and that the only trees hurt were the young trees 1-2 years in age. Older trees were fine. The author also writes that there has been a change in administration which has slowed business, but he believes it will pick up again in the coming spring. The author still has his land in Orchard Dale and has recently bought in North Whittier Heights. The author will mail Mr. Gaustad information on North Whittier Heights under a different cover letter, and will mark the property which he has purchased on the map. The author will also include a map of Southern California which will have the location of Orchard Dale marked. Mr. Gaustad has asked for assistance in securing money for a dredger proposition in Tanana Country. The author does not know anyone in the mining game, but will see what he can do. The author closes the letter by wishing Mr. Gausted and his family are in good health and hoping they will come to California soon. The two pages are glued together along the top. Page 1 (a) has an acid burn on the left side and top, a stain on the right side, and abrasion damage on the top. Page 2 (b) has discoloration on the left and right sides. This object is in good condition overall.
