Description

A letter from John H. Fine of Los Angeles to Pyburn, 22 October 1857. Written on one sheet of light blue paper and folded in half and consisting of three pages, the letter mainly concerns legal woes involving Fine and a doctor. He mentions being sick for two weeks, as well, so that matter might have involved treatment for the illness. Fine also refers to a visit in Los Angeles by the governor and stated, as well, that "after your departure from here two Large Brick Houses have bine [sic] Build [sic] and fine furnished for Stors [sic—Fine was German and his English was halting]." One of these buildings was the first portion of the Temple Block, completed that year by Jonathan Temple with later additions by F. P. F. Temple in the late 1860s to mid-1870s. Fine had been in Los Angeles by at least early 1851, but little is known about him. With foxing, creases and folds, browning, and soiling, the overall condition is good.
