2021.3.1.70a-bDescription
A letter from Katie ----- to John H. Temple, December 1875. The missive is dated 10 December 1865, but is clearly from 1875 given that the envelope is addressed to Temple at Reading, Massachusetts (in care of his Uncle John H. Bancroft), when John was attending school there, but the postmark from Waco, Texas is from 8 December, so the letter's date in December 1875 is uncertain. The sender discussed receiving a letter from John, traveling back home by steamer to San Francisco and then by train east, going to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, reference to a sister Victoria being visited by John's brother Francis, and a statement about the drunken sons of "Mrs. Roland," presumably John Rowland's widow and his children from his first marriage. With tears along a vertical fold, a horizontal fold and light soiling, the letter is in good condition, while the envelope has stains, heavy creasing and soiling, edge wear and tears and is fair.Lexicon
