Description

A letter from Peregrine Fitzhugh to William Workman, 16 August 1870. The missive concerned the correspondent's urging to Workman to settle a lawsuit over disputed title to 5,316 acres of the Rancho La Puente sold by Workman to Fitzhugh (grandson of an aide-de-camp to George Washington during the Revolutionary War) and on which the latter, formerly an ironworking company owner in Maryland, ran sheep. References are made to attorneys Volney Howard, Andrew Glassell and the latter's partners Andrew Chapman and George Smith, as well as to John Rowland and his son-in-law John Reed, who appear to have disputed the land sold to Fitzhugh. In early April 1872, Workman and Fitzhugh sold the tract to Edward F. Beale and Robert S. Baker. With a large stain on the first page, a fold, creases, and some light soiling, the condition is good.
