Description

A letter from Volney E. Howard to William Workman, 16 February 1856. The missive concerns the land claim for the Mission San Gabriel grant, specifically an orange orchard, with the attorney and claimant with Workman and Aaron Pollard recommending not to interfere with its operation, apparently by the priests. The claim was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1864 on the grounds Governor Pío Pico had no authority to make the 1846 grant to Workman and Hugo Reid, whose half interest went to Pollard after Reid's 1852 death. With some creases and light discoloration, the condition is good.
