Description

A letter, map of downtown Los Angeles, and envelope from George W. Simonton to Mrs D. B. Cleveland, 2 August 1891. The letter, on stationery from the Hollenbeck Hotel in Los Angeles, is six pages and has much information on settling in the city, which the recipient, the sender's sister, was evidently contemplating. The map was handwritten by Simonton to correspond with information in the missive. The envelope is also from the hotel and has the address and various stamps. Simonton made reference in the letter to leaving the employ of Mrs. Hollenbeck, this being Elizabeth Hatzfeldt Hollenbeck, widow of John E. Hollenbeck, builder of the hotel building and developer of much of the Boyle Heights neighborhood, where his widow resided after his 1885 death. Shortly afterward, Simonton, a native of Camden, Maine and born in 1824, who had been a teacher and principal at Vallejo, California for many years and who had relocated to Los Angeles, became Mrs. Hollenbeck's business manager and agent and remained in this position for about a decade. He then served on the Los Angeles Board of Education until his death in 1903. He signed the letter with the address of 573 South Boyle, the address of the Hollenbeck residence, not the hotel. With creases and light soiling to the letter, a small ink stain an creases from the folds to the map, and soiling, creases, and the opening tear to the envelope, the overall condition is good.
