Description

A photograph of a mock hanging, Little Tujunga Canyon, 19 or 20 August 1916. The shot shows a group of about twenty persons gathered in front of a barn near the mountains. A man is standing bound with his face masked and a rope around his neck. The rope, however, is attached to a thin piece of wood showed into a space above the barndoor and about seven feet off the ground. Children and adults mimic crying while one man appears to read a death sentence from a piece of paper. On the album paper remnant is an inscription: "The hanging of Will Hartzel at Little Tujunga Canyon on Sun & Sat Aug 19 & 20, 1916." Off to the left is another inscription: "This is a very sad time on this trip." With some soiling, but otherwise little observable wear, the condition is good.
