2013.817.1.1Description
A panorama of the Temple Block and surrounding areas, Los Angeles, James D. Westervelt, ca. 1880s. The view appears to have been taken from atop the Baker Block on Main Street, looking south to the triple intersection of Main, Spring and Temple streets. The Temple Block, consisting of the three-story north end and three other two-story structures, and all built by brothers Jonathan and F.P.F. Temple, between 1857 and 1871, is at the center. The clock tower to the Market House, long used as the courthouse and city and county offices, but built by Jonathan Temple in 1859 as a commercial structure, is behind the block. Portions of other buildings are also in view, as are some horse-drawn vehicles and a small part of a streetcar at the bottom left. On the reverse is a label from book, stationery and news delaer and confectioner John R. Meister of Los Angeles. With stains, soiling, abrasions and a portion of the matte and top of the photo missing, the overall condition is fair.Lexicon
