Description

A panoramic negative of the intersection of Main and First streets downtown Los Angeles, 1901. The image is taken from a corner of the intersection and takes in much of one thoroughfare at the center and left and some of the other at the right. There are horse-drawn vehicles (including one for the California Laundry), bicyclists, pedestrians and two streetcars (one with a sign for the 6th Street and Rampart Boulevard route in the Westlake Park area. Catty corner to the photographer is a two-story commercial building with the German-American Savings Bank as the anchor tenant. On the corner at the far left is a sign for a watch and jewelry store owned by W. T. Harris with a clock built in. In 1905, Harris was at First and Main, so this identifies the intersection.
