Description
A panoramic photograph of a portion of the Hollywoodland subdivision, Los Angeles, ca. 1924. Capturing an area of steep hillsides, the view shows portions of five houses in construction or newly completed, all perched on the hillsides, with one home at the center resting on a pad with a large retaining wall. The houses have European-inspired architecture with turrets, steeply-pitched roofs and abundant use of stone. At the upper right corner, in the haze, is a portion of the tract's promotional sign which later was shortened to the iconic "HOLLYWOOD" sign still extant. On the reverse is a label from former owner John D. Roche, who owned a print and lithography business. The photo was torn about in half, however, and has a few creases and light soiling, but is in poor condition.
