2012.510.1.1Description
A panoramic photograph of the Southern California Fish Company cannery and nearby areas, Terminal Island, Los Angeles Harbor, 1914. The two-story structure's side is in the distance with a long wooden wharf extending into the water to the right and small craft tied up alongside the wharf and a two-story wood structure at its end. To the far left is some construction material and there are a couple of boats in the water. A pencil inscription on the reverse reads,"Dad built this cannery at Fish Harbor it was the first / one built along the first part of 1914. Roy Binkly [?] / work with him he was supt, Dad engineer." The Southern California Fish Company was, along with White Star Fish Company, the first located at East San Pedro in 1912 and construction completed as noted in the inscription. The firm was formed in 1911 out of the defunct California Fish Company. Albert Hafhill created a drying mathod for albacore tuna that led the company to be the first commercial canner of tuna in the previous decade. With part of the lower right corner, outside the photo, missing, a dented corner, creases, soiling, small stains and edge abrasions, the condition is good overall.
