2011.318.1.1Description
A handwritten poem by Mary A. Scott, ca. 1848. The item is a five stanza with chorus poem in four line A-A-B-B rhyme scheme and is a patriotic piece about the United States. References to Oregon and the Rio Grande river as some of the nation's borders appear to date the poem to around 1848. Scott's name and the phrase "Bony Geography" are at the top. On the reverse is a pencil inscription for monies received in Pompey, New York. Scott was the daughter of Jonathan R. Scott, future Los Angeles attorney and justice of the peace, and Elizabeth Glenny. Mary, who came with her father to Los Angeles after her mother's death, married attorney Alfred B. Chapman and died in the 1880s. With much foxing, soili folds and a tear on the intersection of two folds, the item is in fair condition.
