Description

A photo of a submerged dining car of a Union Pacific train derailed near Puente, California, 16 February 1927. The car sits in rushing water from a flood-swollen Puente Creek, while the steel supports of a collapsed trestle are over the car. The train, bound from Los Angeles to Chicago, was crossing Puente Creek, when the trestle collapsed due to flood waters from heavy storms. Two persons died and six were injured of fifteen passengers. In pencil on the reverse is "Disasters, Railway / U.P. train / 2-16-27." A fragment of pink printed paper is pasted down, perhaps for a press agency. With stains on the reverse, soiling, creases and rubbing, the overall condition is good.
