Description

A view of the Mission San Antonio de Padua in present-day Jolon, California, ca. 1920s. The photograph, take from a distance, shows the ruins of the mission, likely the north or a side facade. The wall features decorative arches, with a bell suspended in a niche near the top. Behind the facade stands a larger building, partially visible. A long arched corridor extends from the structure toward the left side of the image. Two large trees frame the scene on either side of the mission. In the background, a mountain range rises along the horizon. In the foreground, a dirt path runs toward the mission, bordered by uneven sparse vegetation and shrubs. During the 1920s, William Randolph Hearst acquired the mission and surrounding land, retaining ownership until about 1940, when he sold it to the U.S. Army. On the reverse of the photograph is an inscription written in blue ink that states "Ruins of Mission or Hearst Ranch". Also, there is an Anderson Photo Service stamp with the number 22 on the back. The photo has minor warping but is in good condition overall.
