A photograph, Saint Nicholas Chapel, ca. 1860s. The image is possibly a reprint. The Gothic revival brick building is featured at left center with five towers along the side, four along the left, and one on the front right. A guard joins each of the towers on the left and a cross caps the two towers on the front of the building where the roof is peaked in the center. In the center below is the arcade entrance with surrounding cornice. Three semicircular windows can be seen along the left wall seperated by a buttress between each. In the foreground is a brick wall with an entrance to the far right with an iron gate; bushes cover the wall near the entrance and grass can be seen in front of the wall. The chapel was built by William Workman in El Campo Santo in 1857 but was destroyed by a fire at the turn of the twentieth century. The inscription, possibly made by Thomas W. Temple, mentions that "Corner stone laid by Rt. Rev. Thaddeus Amat, Bishop of Monterey on May 30, 1857 - Chapel erected for use of family, retainers and neighbors of Rancho La Puente." With discoloration, tears, losses, adhesives, inscriptions in blue ink, and pencil, it is in fair condition.
