Description
A portrait of actor R.D. MacLean as Father Serra in The Mission Play, 1924. The actor, born Rezin Davis Shephard (1859-1946), is shown seated on a carved wood chair in his friar's costume, holding prayer beads with a cross of Christ's crucifixion. He inscribed "Very Sincerely, RD McLean" and the year at the bottom, while on the reverse he wrote "To: / Juan & Juanita / Zorraquinos / Always most sincerely / RD MacLean / 1929— / 'Fray Junipero Serra!'" MacLean played the role for many years, including in 1924 and 1929. With pin holes, warping and light soiling, the overall condition is good.
