Description

A portrait of Pedro de Cordoba as Fray Junipero Serra, ca. 1940s. Cordoba is posed in a kneeling position beside a window with a geometic design. Cordoba played Serra in The Mission Play during it's postwar revival. An inscription from Pedro de Cordoba, including his signature, is present on the back side of the photograph. The inscription is addressed to Jerry Ballard and reads, "To Jerry Ballard / Do your work in the / world, Jerry, and always / keep your faith in God! / 'Padre Junipero' / Pedro de Cordoba." A mark for the John E. Reed Studio in Hollywood can be seen in the bottom left. Another copy of this photo with a different inscription is also in the HM Collection (Object ID: 2022.3.1.49). With minor stains, minor discoloration, minor creases, and minor indentations, the object is in good condition overall.
