Description

A postcard, "Entrance to Old Grapevine (Planted 1765 [sic]) San Gabriel, Cal.," published by Wood's (Inc.) Post Card, Los Angeles, ca. 1910. The image shows a man standing behind an arched opening with an open door. Flanking the door are two small arched openings with bells in them. On the floor to the lower left is a statement about the largest grapevine in the world and containing the dates "1765 to 1906." The caption is in a white box at the bottom. On the reverse, notably, is a statement about the vine, with the presumably correct date of 1775 for the planting (1775 being the year the Mission San Gabriel was moved to its current location). A purple stamp over this area reads "Ramona's Home / San Gabriel, Cal.," a bit of mythology added to the location. With some creases, soiling and abrasions, the condition is good.
