Description

A press photo of accused murderer Clara Phillips returned to the United States from Honduras, 31 May 1923. Phillips, pictured with her sister Etta May Jackson (left) and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department "matron," Mrs. Eugene Biscailuz, whose husband was later the long-time sheriff, was accused and later convicted of second degree murder in the killing of her husband's lover. She escaped from jail and went to Honduras, but was captured by Biscailuz and returned to Los Angeles. She served a dozen years in San Quentin before her release and later moved to Texas. On the reverse is a pasted-down caption and other markings from the International Newsreel company. With a major crease and crack at the right, other creases, soiling, heavy warping, and abrasions, the condition is fair.
