Description
A black and white press photo of the burned out Hewes Market building at 9th and Los Angeles streets, Los Angeles, 1920s. The photo was taken down the street to the north of the ruins with some of the roof framing and brick walls in view. People mill about the structure and there are some parked vehicles near it. The name of the structure is in lettering on the cornice over the entrance and the number "201" is over a door. The Hewes Market opened at 201 E. 9th in the summer of 1901 and was built by David Hewes, a San Francisco capitalist who moved to Los Angeles during the boom of 1887 and later had a ranch in Orange, where a street is named for him. His second wife was the sister of Leland Stanford's wife. The market had vendor stalls running the length of the building . Typed on the reverse is "9th & Los Angeles sts market fire Nov. 20th 10:15 P.M." and the name of George W. Patterson, assistant secretary of the Los Angeles Fire Department. With minr soiling, abrasions, and some creasing, the overall condition is good.
