A press photograph of Susan Howard McCarthy, Hoover Art Company, Los Angeles, 15 November 1923. The subject is shown from about mid-torso up and she wears a dress with much silver applique and lace, two long necklaces and pearl earrings, and a white fur wrap. On the reverse is a pencil inscription reading "Mrs. E. Avery McCarthy" and the city, along with other markings and stamps. Susan Howard was the granddaughter of well-known 19th century lawyer and judge Volney E. Howard and married, in 1905, real estate developer E. Avery McCarthy, whose firm developed tracts in south Los Angeles, the Wilshire corridor, Pasadena and Arcadia, among others. After his death, she married a physician and remained in Los Angeles.
