Description

A press photograph of the automobile of Los Angeles County sheriff John Cline, near the U.S./Mexico border, 26 July 1920. The vehicle is parked in front of a sing-story clapboard structure wioth a projecting gabled roof. A man sits in the driver's seat of the car with another auto parked at the right. A man with a camera and a tripod stands in front of the Cline vehicle. A typed caption on the reverse merely stated that the car was at the "Mexican line ready for dash to San Diego," but the purpose for Cline being so far from Los Angeles is not given, though it appears to have involved Cline's taking custody of famed boxer Jack Johnson, who fled to Mexico after a 1913 Mann Act ("white slavery") conviction involving his wife. A N.E.A. date stamp is at the bottom left corner. Cline was first sheriff in 1893-1894 and then again from 1915-1921, when he was removed by the Board of Supervisors for financial irregularities and appointing too many special deputies as political favors. The image has a major crease at the lower right corner, a few other creases, light soiling and minor rubbing and is in good overall condition.
