2013.895.1.1Description
A press photograph studio portrait of accused murderer Pat Kelly, Hyman De Vorkin, Los Angeles, 22 August 1928. The view shows Kelly in a head-and-torso view, and he wears a dark jacket, white shirt and dark printed tie. De Vorkin's cartouche is at the lower left. A pencil inscription on the reverse reads, "Pat Kelly, accused / in Mellus Murder / Case Los Angeles." Kelly was found in a closet in the house of Frank and Myrtle Mellus and was accused of killing Mrs. Mellus, whose body was found in an upstairs bedroom. Myrtle Mellus's body and Kelly were found by her husband, Francis Hancock Mellus, whose grandfather was prominent early Los Angeles merchant Francis Mellus. With other markings, a date stamp, small stains, soiling, creases, slight warping and edge rubbing, the overall condition is good.
