Description

A PRIEST AND THREE UNKNOWN WOMEN AT MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of a priest with three unknown women at Mission San Gabriel, ca. 1920s. The group stands at the center on a dirt area. A woman at the far left wears a dark hat, jacket, a long dress, and holds a handbag under the left arm. The priest stands next to her and he wears a long coat over his religious attire. He has both arms down at the sides but holds a hat in his left hand. The woman next to him wears a hat, dark jacket, light-colored dress, hose, and holds a purse under her left arm. The woman at the far right also holds a purse under her left arm but she wears a wide-brim hat, a three-pice dress, and hose. Behind them and at the foreground are many bushes and patches of dirt. At the left of the foreground is the bell wall which has four arches. Only one of the bells is seen within the first arch. Moss and ivy lines the top of the wall. To the right are bushes and trees, and to the far right is part of another wall. At the top of the back is the word, "VELOX." At the center is a stamp that reads, "ANDERSON / Photo Service / EL MONTE," and at the bottom left corner is the number, "6." The photograph was housed in Agnes Temple's album which is item 96.7.94.1 along with many other photographs which span 96.7.1.1-.93.1. Contact sheets 2000.159.1.1-.8 show the original positioning of the images within the album. The artifact has stains along the top, but none are on the image itself, making it in fair condition.
