Description

A print of Stephen Watts Kearny, ca. 1848. Taken from an unidentified published source, the image is a head-and-shoulder view of the Army brigadier general in uniform next to a landscape backdrop and which is indicated as being from a daguerreotype. Kearny, who took control of New Mexico during the Mexican-American War, was defeated by Andrés Pico at a battle near San Diego upon arrival in California, and joined Robert Stockton and John C. Frémont for the final conquest of California at Los Angeles in January 1847. Ending the war in Veracruz and Mexico City, Kearny contracted yellow fever and died of the disease at St. Louis in 1848 at age 54. With some soiling, stains, creases and rubbing, the overall condition is good.
