Description

A print of William S. Rosecrans, 1863. The item, removed from a book (shadows from a page of which are on the reverse), shows the Civil War general from the Union Army in uniform with a cloak draped over his shoulders. He stands near a desk and chair holding a document in his hands. On a wall over his left shoulder is a map of Mufreesboro, Tennessee, referencing a battle during which Rosecrans was a commander. A facsimile of his signature is at the bottom along with reference to publishing information and the fact that the print came from a painting by Chappell. Rosecrans (1819-1898) was discredited after a disastrous defeat at the Battle of Chickamauga and, soon after the war, relocated to Los Angeles County and bought 16,000 acres of Rancho San Pedro in 1869. He also served in Congress from 1881 to 1885 and Rosecrans Avenue is named for him. With minimal wear and soiling, the condition is good.
