Description

A program for "The Mission Play," 1924. The front cover of the publication has an illustration of the Mission San Gabriel belfry with orange/red coloring, vegetation with green coloring, and purple text. Photographs of the cast and dancers are printed throughout. The publication contains articles that describe the play's contents and cast; the playhouse which was under construction in San Gabriel, California; and the play's author, John Steven McGroarty. The program also includes poems and an article by Mr. McGroarty on California's missions, as well as various advertisements. An inscription on the front cover of the program reads, "Hoping for your best success in your new profession," followed by a signature that reads, "Bill Harrison," and two words which are hard to discern. Another inscription on the back side of the front cover reads, "Congratulations to the great character artist Carmen Lara / 1931 / and mine also / Nov. 4, 1931," followed by a signature that reads, "John Steven McGroarty." Planar damage on the page has made it hard to discern whether "Carmen Lara" is the full name listed. Although this copy of the program is missing its back cover, the page, which is an ad for Perflex Radio, is part of another copy in the HM Collection (Object ID: 99.17.1.1). There was a nonprofessional attempt to repair the object with staples and adhesive tape which has left the pages out of order. With tape adhered to the program's spine, minor tears, minor acid burns, minor abrasions, discoloration, and ink stains, the object is in fair condition overall.
