2022.3.2.8Description
A program for "The Mission Play," 5 March 1927. The pink cover has an illustration of a Spanish dancer in a green, black, and purple dress with orange fringe who is performing a flamenco style dance with the cream-colored Mission San Gabriel visible in the background. The program contains summaries of the play's acts; a section regarding the author, John Steven McGroarty; and a colored panorama illustration of one of the scenes. Cast members, patrons, and other individuals involved in the production are listed throughout the program. Three studio photos of a Mission Play actress, Lucretia del Valle, were stored inside the front cover of this program when it was acquired, one of which was signed by her (Object IDs: 2022.3.1.92, 2022.3.1.93, and 2022.3.1.94). A newspaper clipping was also stored inside the program (Object ID: 2022.3.2.23). A sheet of paper displaying a newspaper clipping has been adhered to the back side of this program. The text is said to be a letter from Frank Staples, who claims to have played Father Fernando in the Mission Play from 1912 to 1924, and who lists the years during which certain performers played the role of Fray Junipero Serra. With minor cuts to the cover, minor tears, minor acid burns, minor discoloration, and flaking which is affecting the adhered paper on the back side, the object is in fair condition overall.
