Description

A real photo postcard, "Abbotsford Inn, Eighth and Hope Sts, Los Angeles, Cal.," C. C. Pierce and Company, postmarked 6 March 1909. The view takes in the front and one side of the three-story structure with a corner tower, which was built in 1888 by D. W. Hanna for the Los Angeles College, a girls boarding school. Abbot Kinney, founder of Venice, bought the building in the 1890s and reconfigured it as a 100-room hotel. In 1914, the structure was bought by the First Methodist Church, which then razed the edifice seven years later for a new church, of which images are in the museum collection. The postally used card has light soiling, yellowing and edge rubbing and is in good overall condition.
