2012.549.1.1Description
A real photo postcard of the Barber residence, Los Angeles, December 1916. The view is of the front elevation of the Tudor-style house, which has an extensive set of vines growing on it, a three-quarter porch, a second-floor balcony over the front door, a lawn, a paved driveway, and an open seocnd-floor window with a bearded man looking out of it. This might be Dr. Edward T. Barber, the owner with his wife Matilda Bennison. On the reverse is a blue ink inscription by Mrs. Bennison for the holiday season and the names of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bennison, relatives of her. A black ink inscription has Dr. Barber's name and the house's address of 967 Arapahoe, Los Angeles (the house still stands.) A pencil inscription notes a full dress dinner held here "to meet the California relatives. Louis Bennison (the actor) present." Bennison, known for his cowboy roles for the Betzwood Film Studios, later was alleged to have committed a murder/suicide with stage actress Margaret Lawrence in New York in June 1929. With some soiling, edge browning, and ink staining to the top of the photo, and minor fading, the overall condition is good.Lexicon
