Description

A real photo postcard of the Hilkey residence, Long Beach, ca. 1910s. The image shows the dark-painted one-story wood-sided bungalow from the sidewalk by the street and covers its front and side elevation. Notable are the attic dormer, casement windows, half-porch, lawn, new-looking shrubs and other landscape and a power pole stabilizing line running vertically through the photo. Inscribed on the reverse of the unused card is "Home of James & Charles Hilkey / 111 Grand Ave / Long Beach / Calif." James Hilkey, born in Indiana in 1850, resided there and in Nebraska before coming to Long Beach by 1910. He was widowed and living with his son at that point and, by 1918, the two were in this house, though Charles moved elsewhere in town with his wife and his father remained in the structure alone until his death, presumably in the 1920s. Charles was the stationary engineer for the First National Bank Building, later Inloe Building, at 1st and Pine in Long Beach and left on a vacation in 1951 when he was 70. Newspapers reported that, while he was away, the clock jammed and stopped for the first time in its 44-year history and that, almost simultaneously, Charles took ill and died in Kingsburg, Fresno County. With a stain at the rooftop, one on the reverse, and some edge abrasions, darkening of the image, the condition is good.
