2012.704.1.1Description
A real photo postcard of the Oakes residence, S. Cliff, Los Angeles, ca. 1910s. The view shows a man, girl and dog at ground level and a woman on the side of the porch of the single-story Craftsman-style house. There is a half-length porch, casement windows, an attic dormer, and minimal landscaping, as if the house was fairly new. On the reverse is an address to Massachusetts and at the bottom left the inscription: "Clement & Em Oakes / 849 West 62 St, Losangeles, Cal." A Clement Oakes lived in Los Angeles at the time, though his address was mainly at Terminal Island and he worked as a lumber yard man and a mail carrier. Photographer Cliff's stamp gives his address as 146 W. 63rd Street. This house, between Hoover and Vermont in south Los Angeles, still stands. With minor stains, browning, soiling and abrasions, the overall condition is good.Lexicon
