Description

A real photo postcard of the residence of William W. and Elena Hurlbut, Los Angeles, 7 August 1911. There is a little girl on the lawn at the front of the gabled Craftsman-style house with pronounced eave brackets and dual posts on the porch spanning the front. A tall chimney is at the left and portions of the landscape are also in view. On the reverse is an address to William at the headquarters of the Los Angeles Aqueduct project in downtown, the date and a message of "Hello Daddy!!" Hurlbut was an engineer with the Los Angeles water department and, in 1903, married Elena Wolfskill, daughter of Joseph W. Wolfskill (son of William) and Elena Pedrorena. The couple had two daughters, the one shown here being their eldest, Maria. After Elena Hurlbut died in 1922, his widow married her cousin, Tulita Altamirano, and continued residing in the house through the 1940 census. With ink from the cancellation stamp on part of the roof, light soiling and minor edge abrasions, the overall condition is good.
