2012.719.1.1Description
A real photo postcard of the Sturgeon family at a mountain camp site, probably the San Gabriel Mountains, ca. 1908. The image shows a man, a boy, two women and a dog at the site, which contains a wood-frame cabin, a large canvas tent, a hammock on which one of the women sits, and an American flag hanging from a tree. Trees, rocks and other elements of the mountainous site, which is not identified, are also of note. On the reverse of the postally unused card is a stamp with the name and address of Phineas B. Sturgeon (1868-1944), an Indiana native who came to Los Angeles from Ohio about 1894 with his family. He married Julia Sturges in 1898 and settled in Boyle Heights the following year, remaining there for at least ten years. Formerly a carpenter and building contractor, he became a letter carrier in 1899, but later went into real estate when he moved elsewhere in Los Angeles. Sturgeon was a trustee and financial secretary of the Boyle Heights Methodist Episcopal Church, as well. With soiling and staining on the reverse and edge abrasions, the overall condition is good.Lexicon
