Description

A real photo postcard of what is probably the Olinda Oil Field, Brea, California, February 1914. The image shows oil derricks, tanks, well structures and houses on sloping land near bare hills in the distance. A raised pipeline runs along the right side of the image. In the foreground are some oil tank cars with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad initials on one of them. This suggests the spur line that ran from Atwood in Placentia northwest to the Olinda field, much of which was controlled by the Santa Fe Railroad. Additionally, the topography and hills suggest the field which lay at the base of the Chino Hills. At the top of the photo is the ink inscription, "Does this look natural?" On the reverse is a message to a San Francisco couple, which briefly mentions the wells, but not the locale. With some pest damage, browning, soiling and creases, the condition is fair.
