Description
A real photo postcard studio portrait of Rose Lopez Wilhite, 9 April 1910. Rose is standing behind a chair, on which she rests her arms. She wears a black dress with heavy embroidery or beading and a high collar. She has on a large hat with feathers and a floral decorative element. On the reverse is an ink inscription with "Apr 9—1910 / Mrs. R. Wilhite / Los Angeles Calif. / 1132 W. Wash. St." Rose Lopez was born in Arizona in 1870 or 1872 and married Samuel C. Wilhite from Ukiah when she was 15 years old. They lived at San Pedro where he was lumber yard surveyor and had two sons and a daughter. In the 1910 census, she was listed as divorced, though in subsequent Los Angeles directories she was shown as a widow. In fact, her ex-husband remarried and had another son, dying in San Pedro in 1931. Rose remarried to Edwin Jolly and died in Los Angeles in 1946. With a creased corner, slight soiling and yellowing on the reverse, the overall condition is good.
