Description

A receipt from L. J. Rose and Co., Limited, San Gabriel, California, undated, but ca. 1888. The letterhead has the Sunny Slope Vineyards logo, company name, note that it was a successor to Stern and Rose, mention that it was "Proprietors of Sunny Slope Vineyards" and location. The buyer's name and city are at the top and the sales record shows the material purchased, including 1876 port and 1882 Sherry. Stern and Rose, formed in 1878 when the latter joined with the former, who had a vineyard at Macy Street and the Los Angeles River from the 1850s, ended in 1887 and Rose's concern was taken over by a British syndicate before his suicide in 1892. With staining at the top left, folds, minor soiling and some creases, the condition is good overall.
