Description
A receipt from the Los Angeles City Water Company to William S. Chapman, 1 April 1869. The item was for a monthly charge for water by the private firm, formed the previous year and given a 30-year charter, that supplied Los Angeles through zanjas (ditches) from a delivery system including reservoirs. On the reverse is a notation that Chapman, who soon moved to what became East Pasadena, resided on Fort Street (renamed Broadway in 1890). With a crease, some soiling and slight staining, the condition is good.
