Description
A reprint photograph of a classroom at Sand Street School, Los Angeles, 1895. The image shows students at blackboards drawing geometrical figures and shapes while others sit at desks. On an easel at left is a music score, while a pasted-down caption reads “1895-Music-J.A. Foshay, Supt.” A banner near a door has the school name on it, the campus formerly called Central School and later was California Street School after the renaming of Sand Street to California in 1897, but the edifice was built in 1873 and known as Los Angeles High School, though it contained classrooms for lower grades. With losses at the lower right corner, abrasions, creases, warping, soiling and staining, the condition is fair.
