Description

Color: Black; White An article,"A Ride With Kit Carson," by George D. Brewerton, with the title page and table of contents, disbound from Volume VII of Harper's New Monthly Magazine, June to November 1853, published by Harper & Brothers, Publishers, New York. The 28-page article describes Brewerton's experiences while traveling with Carson and his expedition from Los Angeles to Santa Fe, New Mexico in the spring of 1848. Of interest is Brewerton's description of Los Angeles and the encampment of Carson at "Bridge Creek", seventeen miles east of Los Angeles, which is San Jose Creek on the Rancho La Puente, then-owned by William Workman and John Rowland. Carson lived in Taos, New Mexico, where Workman and Rowland lived in the 1820s, 1830s, and very early 1840s. Carson was also an apprentice in the saddlery of Workman's brother David in Franklin, Missouri in the mid-1820s. Also of note is that John Rowland sent a letter to New Mexico with the Carson caravan described in this article, though no mention of Rowland or Workman is made in the text. With slight creasing, corner dents, some soiling, paper yellowing, small corner folds, minor foxing, light stains, and very small edge tears, the overall condition is fair.
