Description

A scrapbook, ca. 1910-1930. Dates listed within the scrapbook range from 1912 to 1930. The book contains many newspaper clippings with articles that focus on Juan Zorraquinos' and Juanita Vigare Zorraquinos' participation in the Mission Play, as well as their performances as the Spanish Troubadours. Other articles discuss the Mission Play's seasons, Mission San Gabriel, the Mission Playhouse, and various Mission Play actors, such as Lucretia Del Valle, Frederick Warde, George Osbourne, and Patia Power. Play pamphlets and theater programs are also present. Several photos at the end of the book feature Vigare and Zorraquinos. The two subjects are visible in three photographs from the 156th anniversary of the founding of San Diego, which they attended with John Steven McGroarty and other Mission Players. When acquired, a loose newspaper clipping was stored inside the scrapbook which features an article about visiting the Mission San Gabriel (b). Another loose clipping features an advertisement for Juan Zorraquinos and his Mexican Orchestra, and Juanita Vigare's position as dancing director for Las Paisanitas (c). The spine of the book is covered in adhesive tape from a nonprofessional repair attempt. The ephemera within the book have moderate discoloration, minor tears, minor folds, minor flaking, embrittlement, and minor acid burns. The photographs within the book have minor discoloration. The covers of the book have suffered from fading, minor scratches, minor discoloration/stains, and the spine has severe cracks. Overall, the scrapbook and its contents are in fair to poor condition.
