"A SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF COMMODORE ROBERT F. STOCKTON" Color: Brown "A Sketch of the Life of Commodore Robert F. Stockton," by Samuel Bayard (New York: Derby & Jackson, 1856), 131 pp. The book has a brown hardcover that has embossed ornate designs at the corners of the front and back. The title is on the spine in gold lettering that has largely faded. At the beginning of the inside are a title page, a summary of chapters, an appendix, and an introduction. With fifteen chapters, the book details the Commodore's ancestry, rise through the ranks of the United States Navy, his role in the conquest of California, and his life in politics. Also contained are his speeches in the Senate and political letters. In fair condition, the artifact has some abrasions; brittleness along the spine; slightly dented corners; soiling; discoloration of the cover; fading of the lettering on the spine; much foxing on many pages; pen markings on the flysheets; stains; tears on the cover fabric; and overall heavy wear.
