Description

A snapshot of Josephine Angarola and May Sylvester in Big Santa Anita Canyon, San Gabriel Mountains, 1914. Angarola stands at the left next to a donkey, on which is Sylvester. They are on a trail near a brush-covered hillside. At the top in ink is "3 of a kind." At the bottom are the names of the two girls, the location and the year. Angarola, an Italian, resided with her wine merchant uncle and his family on W. 35th Street in south Los Angeles. She would go on to marry a man named Wallace Arguid, a plumber. Sylvester, whose mother was Canadian and German and whose father was an Italian fruit dealer almost certainly named Silvestro, lived on S. New Hampshire in modern Koreatown and taught school in the 1910s. With a small stain on the margin at the upper right, minor soiling and album paper residue on the revese, the condition is good overall.
