2012.695.1.1Description
A snapshot of students and a teacher, Fruitland School, Maywood, California, 11 June 1909. The photo (a) is of a group of 23 children and the female instructor, who are in front of a wooden structure with a partially-visible entrance behind them. The students are mostly while, with one Japanese and perhaps two Latino students in the group. The photo was in a thick board frame and, on the reverse of that, is an ink inscription: "Fruitland School / Los Angeles, Cal. / June 11, 1909 / Edith A. Eckleen, teacher." An arrow on the top margin of the photo points to the boy at the top of the group, but there is no identification. Fruitland School was in the community of that name on the west bank of the Los Angeles River and this area later became Maywood. The frame (b) has two pinholes, tears, missing portions and is highly acidic, so the photo was removed, It has minor stains and discoloration from the frame on the reverse, but its condition is good overall.
