Description
A snapshot of the Angels Flight Railway and Third Street tunnel, Los Angeles, ca. 1910s. The view shows a horse-drawn cart crossing Third on Hill Street. Behind the cart on Third is the tunnel going under Bunker Hill. To the left of the tunnel and going up and down the hill is the Angels Flight funicular railway, which opened in 1901, with its ornate arched entrance at street level and the observation tower on top of the hill. Portions of hotels, apartment buildings, and other commercial structures are in view, as well. With minor warping, rubbing and soiling, the condition is good.
