Description

A snapshot of the Hotel Van Nuys, Los Angeles, ca. 1896. The view takes in two sides of the six-story structure, which has large awnings on the first floor storefronts and smaller ones over the windows of the hotel rooms above. On top of the structure is a large sign with the hostelry's name. Located at the northwest corner of Main and 4th streets, the hotel became The Barclay in 1926 and the building still stands. At the lower left is part of a two-story commercial building with wide awnings, on which is the word "MUSEUM." With some fading and minor soiling, the condition is good.
