Description

A snapshot photograph of a sand wheel, North Hollywood, 11 October 1929. The device is made up of a wooden box on which an apparatus with a wheel is mounted at a 45 degree angle, and sits on the ground. Nearby are piles of debris, a bush and a fence. The sand wheel was used to remove sediment, fine waste, slime and other debris with the sand being rotated by the wheel for the filtration process. On the reverse is an ink inscription: "Sand Wheel / Walter B. Stine / North Hollywood / Calif. / Oct 11 -29." With some album paper residue on the reverse, minor soiling, moderated warping, some loss to the top right edge, and heavy fading, the condition is fair overall.
