Description

A snapshot photograph of an area at the mouth of San Gabriel Canyon, 6 October 1929. Though an ink inscription on the reverse appears to read "San Gabriel Dam / West Side / Oct. 6th 1929," it appears that the view is of a sand and gravel operation, probably at Fish Canyon, which is on the west side of the canyon mouth. There are several cars of a train at the base of the mountain side and a conveyor leading up several dozen feet. The view is from a distance, so details are hard to make out. Some vehicles, a small structure and other items are of note along the mountain side, as well. San Gabriel Dam, however, was not started until 1932 and opened in 1939. With heavy fading (or haziness in the original), minor warping, and album paper residue on the reverse, the condition is good.
