A stereoscopic photograph, "58. Bixby's Residence, Garden View," Henry T. Payne (probably originally by William M. Godfrey,) ca. 1872 (1870). The image shows several persons, presumably Bixby family members, standing near two round tanks, assumed for water storage, amidst a dense profusion of trees, bushes, shrubs and other plantings on the west side of the adobe. If the photo was taken by Godfrey in 1870 and republished by Payne, then the majority of these plantings would have been by the previous owner, Jonathan Temple, who sold the Rancho Los Cerritos and its two-story adobe house to the Bixbys in 1866. With heavy soiling, stains, and significant rubbing, the condition is fair.Lexicon
